How To Make Your Space Work—For the Whole Family

We know you’ve got the hang of your home office, considering many of us have been working from home for the past several months. But as many of our future leaders must adapt to learning and growing from home, we’ve created a guide to help you design the perfect work spaces for everyone in your household.

For many of us, 2020 has caused us to reevaluate how we use our space—and how our space works for us. All Colina Homes are designed with plenty of open spaces for ultimate comfort and peace of mind for families who need to work—or learn—from home.

As you navigate this new reality, we’re sharing some ways to support your family’s new work-and-learn-from-home lifestyle.

Functionality for the whole family.

We build our homes with families in mind, perfect for creating routines that make the everyday stresses a little more seamless. In light of the pandemic and the present school year for many kids being reimagined in a new way, it’s important to consider all the ways we can adjust our space to make this a seamless transition for everyone.

Carve out the perfect space based on your kiddo’s age—and learning style.

Chances are, you grew up doing homework at your kitchen table or on your bed. So having a desk for your kids isn’t always a necessity—but it is best to have a consistent spot where you can have your kids get their work done everyday.

For some kids, having a designated desk may be the best solution for productivity and focus. But don’t be afraid to try a nontraditional workspace—if your child’s learning style doesn’t mesh well with a desk, there’s no need to force it!

And don’t forget about noise control—with an entire family juggling Zoom calls and background music, it’s easy to get overwhelmed quickly. Thankfully, Colina Homes are built with ample space for everyone to spread out and work according to their own schedules—without too many distractions. (But if it’s still too loud? Maybe investing in a quality pair of headphones for when you need to meet that deadline.)

Help to organize their space for peace of mind.

With remote learning or some combination of remote/in-person classes, kids may have to keep track of more assignments and shifting schedules. And depending on the age of your kiddo, they may need space for arts and crafts or highly-focused studying time.

A chalkboard wall can be a fun way to keep the whole family organized and aligned throughout the week. With a variety of options, ranging from paint to peel-and-stick, consider adding a chalkboard wall to your home.

Decorate for productivity.

While we build our homes with plenty of access for natural light to shine through and brighten your home, adding in pops of color and accent walls to your designated work spaces can help elevate the productivity of your entire family—and add a bit of personality while you’re at it!

Surrounding ourselves with certain colors can have a direct impact on our mood and energy, and these emotions are even more heightened in developing minds. Consider these colors in particular to enhance the natural light and productivity in your home.

  1. Green

    • Shades of green are known for promoting concentration and relaxation.

    • You could opt for some faux plants and greenery throughout your work stations to naturally bring some nature inside without the mess and maintenance.

  • Orange

    • Orange is a great color for promoting a positive mindset throughout the day. For an optimistic day of learning and working, consider accenting your windows with orange curtains or adding a rug to your shared workplace!

  • Blue

    • Blue is most often linked to productivity and calmness—perfect for helping the whole family check off tasks on their to-do list.

Recess just got better.

Burnout is real, and our kids feel it too! Taking regular breaks throughout the day will promote productivity, focus, and help to increase motivation. And with Colina, recess can be whenever you want. Our communities feature a multitude of amenities to accommodate the entire family—pets included!

Katy Lakes Trails

If your community features trails, take a sunset stroll or a quick bike ride for a breath of fresh air. If your community has a pool, splash pad, or playground, grab the kids after that last Zoom call and catch some rays.

In a year full of change and uncertainty, carving up time for quality time with your family and taking advantage of Colina’s community amenities will help make sure this year is as normal and enjoyable as possible!

Take a deep breath.

We know back to school is already a stress-inducing time of year, but you can ensure success for your entire family when they’re all working and learning from a Colina home. Take some time to make sure you have the best #WFH situation that gives everyone the tools they need for success—in the workplace and in the classroom.

Have you been reevaluating what you need from your home? We hear you. This year has forced many of us to become well-acquainted with our spaces!
