How to Move Safely During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Moving any time of the year is typically a little bit stressful and hectic. But this spring and summer, many of our wonderful residents are moving in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic—and we know that staying safe is on everyone’s minds, especially as infection rates in Houston rise.

To ensure the health of you, your family, and our greater community, we’re sharing some insights into making your move a successful and safe one.

On the Move

If you’re on the move this summer, know that you’re not alone. Millions of Americans are moving—and many are relocating due to the COVID-19 outbreak. According to Pew Research, approximately one-in-five U.S. adults, or 22 percent, say that they either changed their residence or know someone who has.

And although our reasons for moving are varied—and not necessarily related to the pandemic—moving, no matter what, can feel like a challenge. But rest assured: with heightened awareness and just a bit of research, you can make your move safe, seamless, and even stress-free.

Hiring Movers

Just as we are all learning to exercise caution while running our daily errands now or going out to eat by keeping our distance and wearing a mask, moving will be much the same.

If you’ve decided you want movers to help you with your relocation, do a little bit of research beforehand. Many moving companies have added their updated safety practices to their websites and social media channels. Peruse your local options and see what they’re offering. Then, if you have any questions, reach out to them to make sure you feel comfortable with their routines.

The North American Moving Services organization has noted that they are closely monitoring their employees to ensure everyone stays healthy. They’re also reaching out to customers to find out if anyone has COVID-19 symptoms or has been exposed to the virus.

Time to Move!

Once you’ve found movers that you feel comfortable with, think through the process of allowing them into your house. If you can, limiting exposure with the number of people inside the house during the move is a good idea.

  • Wear masks and gloves

  • Disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces (such as door handles)

  • Have a bottle of hand sanitizer nearby for use

Try to stay 6 feet away from your moving crew as well and avoid handshakes. Most movers should come equipped with their own masks,  gloves, and hand sanitizer. Instead of tipping with cash, see if you can add it to your credit card payment or even see if Venmo is an option.

Settling In Safely

Studies have suggested that the coronavirus can linger on cardboard for up to 24 hours—although it does disintegrate over the course of that time period. Some families may opt to stash most of their boxes in the garage for a day to eliminate all risks, but chances are, you’ll be completely fine to simply open your boxes and wash your hands afterwards.

At the end of the day, although this is a stressful time, moving doesn’t have to be. By practicing social distancing and ensuring that your moving company is doing their part to keep their employees and their clients safe, you should enjoy a safe and seamless move!
